An Introduction to Astrology

Astrology has been around since the Mesopotamia period, around the 3rd millennium BC, and is a complex art and science which applies symbolic meaning to astronomical information. While astronomers map the stars and planets in the sky, astrologers apply meaning to those positions.

Astrologers will begin by casting a natal chart, or horoscope, based on the date, time and place you were born. This is also more commonly known as a birth chart. When I was a teenager and first learned astrology, I did this by hand using an ephemeris table (a table that provides information on the positions of celestial objects such as stars and planets on given dates in the past or future). Nowadays, this is done on a computer which makes them very accurate. I also have an app on my phone that will cast a birth chart in seconds rather than the hours it would take by hand!! Of course, they are only as accurate as the information provided. If you are unsure of your birth time then this will affect the accuracy.

Your birth time is used to calculate the positions of the planets and your Ascendant or Rising Sign (the most personal point of your chart). This calculation is then used to determine the degree for the Midheaven and all of the house cusps. These house cusps then determine which house your planets will be in. Put together, this information can be used in a variety of ways to not only understand yourself better and why you do what you do, but also to predict the best times for you to do things.

If you do not know your exact time of birth, then the chart cast will not be entirely accurate. It will still be a useful tool for understanding yourself and the general information gained from it will be good. But there will be some aspects and predictions that are not quite right.

Let’s go back to the houses. Your birth chart is divided into 12 houses which each cover a different area of your life. Understanding the zodiac sign assigned to each house can help you to understand yourself and the challenges and strengths that you have. Here is a brief summary of each house;

  1. Self and Identity

  2. Money and Skills

  3. Thinking and Expression

  4. Home and Your Roots

  5. Creativity and Fun

  6. Work, Routines and Health

  7. Your Partner

  8. Debt, Death and Healing

  9. Teaching, Learning and Faith

  10. Your Career and Reputation

  11. Community and Wishes

  12. The Unconscious Mind and Fears

There are many different types of Astrology and House Systems. I focus on Moonology™ which uses the Whole House System. This means that each house is equal in size, exactly 30 degrees, and has one zodiac sign for each house. Once you know what your Rising Sign is, you assign that sign to the first house. You then assign the next sign to the second house and continue all the way to the twelfth house.

So what is Moonology? This is a branch of astrology that focus on the Moon and the Law of Attraction to set and achieve your goals. For each New Moon, you look to see which Zodiac sign it is falling in, and which house that is for you. Then you can set goals and intentions in that area of your life. For each Full Moon, you look to see which house is being illuminated and where you might need to make changes. Essentially, at the New Moon, we add things and at the Full Moon, we take things away. By using the Whole House System, you are able to work on a different area of your life each month. And if you don’t know your exact time of birth then you can use your Star Sign instead of your Rising Sign.
