New Moon in Aquarius
On Friday (9th February) at 10.58 pm (GMT) we have the New Moon in visionary Aquarius. This New Moon also marks the start of the Chinese New Year. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this New Moon and how you can work with it.
New Moons mark the start of a new lunar cycle. This is a time to set our intentions for the next 4 weeks, which will help us to achieve our goals. Generally, anything started under a New Moon should be completed by the Full Moon in the same sign. This gives us a 6-month container to work with. (The Full Moon in Aquarius is on the 19th of August) When making New Moon Wishes, you can go as big or as small as you like. If you make a big wish, you can break it down into smaller, manageable goals. This allows you to track your progress as we move through each lunar cycle.
Not all New Moon’s are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, giving us a double dose of the sign's energy to work with. This is why people work with this energy to set their goals.
This New Moon is being challenged by Uranus which is currently in Taurus. Uranus is the planet that likes to mix things up, it isn’t interesting in doing things the old way. This is where we break traditions and start new ones. In Taurus, this is about paying attention to our finances and making sure we feel secure in our financial future.
Uranus brings surprises and shocks to this New Moon. It could be a new situation or development that you didn’t see coming. Maybe you are feeling restricted by others? Are there any ideas or even people, that you feel the need to rebel against? Ask yourself what is it that you actually want? Why do you want that? My favourite Amanda Frances journal prompt is “if you knew you couldn’t fail, if you knew you couldn’t mess it up, if you knew no one would get hurt, what is that you would actually want?
With the Sun and Moon right next to each other for the New Moon, it means the Sun is also being challenged by Uranus. This can be a frustrating time when we can feel judged by other people. Make your plans but wait to take action. Never make important decisions when you are mad, this leads to rash decisions that you regret later.
This New Moon is supported by Mercury and Pluto, who are also currently in Aquarius. Mercury, the planet of communication, brings new ideas, new ways of thinking, and a more logical approach to problem-solving when in Aquarius. Pluto can bring changes to structures, and advances in technology. Don’t be put off by something new, instead learn what you can about it. It might surprise you.
Mercury is also challenging Jupiter in Taurus. This conversation can make us feel like everything is possible, and help us to grow our wealth and skills. While you can feel more optimistic at this time, don’t forget to look at the bigger picture so you don’t let yourself get carried away. Remember that there is more than one way to achieve what you want and a different way might be even better than you first thought.
We also have Mars and Venus in Capricorn. Venus, the planet of love and abundance, reminds us that we have to put in the hard work to get the relationships and business that we desire. While Mars, the planet of drive and determination, reminds us that long-term success requires a strategic approach and focusing on one thing.
During this New Moon, think about the goals you have set yourself for the year and all the different ways you could achieve them. Don’t fall into that tunnel vision trap of this is the way it has always been done and so I have to do it this way.
Aquarius is one of the four fixed signs, which follow the goal-focused cardinal signs. These are the more stubborn signs which essentially fix in place what was started under the cardinal signs. Aquarius has themes around progression, rebelling and experimentation, making it the ideal New Moon to look at different approaches to reaching your goals.
As one of the three Air element signs, Aquarius is people-oriented, detached, inventive, independent and freedom-loving. This is the quirky rebel of the zodiac and they don’t fit into society's boxes. The intellectual and unusual Aquarius approach can be used to help you think outside of the box and take a more data-gathering approach to your goals. What are the things that work well for you? What do you enjoy? What doesn’t work well? Where can you find a different approach?
When setting your Aquarius New Moon intentions, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.
What are my intentions for this lunar cycle?
Where do I need a different perspective?
How can I stay inspired?
Where do I need more freedom?
What changes do I need to embrace?
How can I connect to others?
There are also some practical ways that you can work with this New Moon. As Aquarius is the sign of the technology, checking wi-fi passwords and security is a great thing to do. As a humanitarian sign, it is also a good time to give to charity, time or money, or anything else you can donate. As a social sign, it could be time to join a new group or club. Create a plan to make changes in your life and work on any bad habits that you have. It would also be a great time for an astrology reading.
The Aquarius New Moon also marks the start of the New Chinese Year, which is going to be the year of the Dragon, which represents authority, prosperity, and good fortune. It is also a Wood Dragon which brings evolution, improvement, and abundance. How can you bring this energy into your New Moon Wishes?
It is also important to note that the Moon will be Void Of Course immediately following the New Moon until 1.42 pm on Saturday so avoid doing your New Moon Wishes until after this time.
