A couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog post about the moon in your birth chart and how the New and Full Moon’s can affect you. (You can read that one here) This week, I want to talk about your Lunar Return. What is it, what can it be used for, and how can it be worked with?

You may have heard of a Solar Return, or even a Saturn Return, but have you heard of a Lunar Return? If you didn’t know, a planetary return is the moment when a planet returns to the exact same position it was in at the time of your birth. These can vary in length due to the planet involved and will bring different meanings and messages.

A Solar Return happens once a year, usually on or around your birthday and gives you insights into the year ahead. A Mars Return happens every two and a half years and will guide you in taking action. A Jupiter Return brings good luck and abundance every 12 or 13 years, while a Saturn Return brings life-changing lessons every 29 years.

Your Lunar Return is a snapshot of what is to come in the month ahead and occurs roughly every 28 days. It can show your personal path, and offer guidance and opportunities for growth. As the moon rules our emotions, inner self and feelings, it’s a great way to check in with yourself each month.

We can get an overview of moods and emotions for the upcoming month. See which areas of our life might need extra attention or nurturing. It can help us understand why we feel the way that we do. The themes and energies for the upcoming month and how to navigate them, are all found in our Lunar Return.

You can cast your own Lunar Return here. You will need your exact date, time and place of birth, along with your current location.

There are three things to look for in your Lunar Return chart. The first is the house that the Lunar Return Moon is in. This is where you will be emotionally invested this month and where your focus will be. Here is a quick overview of the 12 houses

  1. Your appearance, how you come across in the world

  2. Cash, property and possessions

  3. Communication, how you express yourself and learn, and also short trips

  4. Home and family, where you come from and where feels like home

  5. The fun house includes romance, pleasure, creativity and children

  6. This is where life takes over, this is your daily routines and health

  7. The love zone covers your most important one-to-one relationships. Your partner, your ex, and also any open enemies

  8. Sex and Money

  9. Travel, adventure, legal matters, the great comic quest to understand life

  10. Your professional life, your reputation and the mark you leave on the world, your career and ambitions

  11. Your networks, your friends, groups that you belong to and also the house of what you wish for

  12. The deepest, darkest and most mysterious part of your chart. Your fears and your spirituality

So, if your Lunar Return Moon is in your first house, you might spend more time focused on your appearance, while if it is in your fifth house, you might want to make more time for fun this month.

The next thing to look at is the Ascendant (Rising Sign) on the Lunar Return Chart. This is the thick black horizontal line labelled ASC in the above image. This shows you how you are going to come across this month. How you will approach emotions and personal matters, and also how you will engage with others. Will you be;

  1. A high-energy, competitive and passionate Aries with a lack of patience

  2. A comfort and indulgent-seeking Taurus looking for stability and a sense of security

  3. A fickle, swift-moving Gemini focused on communication and siblings

  4. A sentimental, domesticated Cancer focused on your home and family

  5. A creative and courageous Leo following your passions and hobbies

  6. An organised and serving Virgo striving for that perfect work-life balance

  7. A compromising Libra focusing on relationships and your commitments

  8. A secretive Scorpio searching for transformation and facing repressed feelings

  9. An adventure-seeking Sagittarius looking to step outside your comfort zone

  10. A disciplined and ambitious Capricorn focused on structure and your career

  11. A friendly Aquarius focused on community and technology, experiencing unexpected breakthroughs

  12. A compassionate and intuitive Pisces looking at unconscious patterns.

We can also look at where this sign falls in your birth chart. That house will be where we can expect things to come up.

The final thing to look at is how the Lunar Return Moon is interacting with the other planets. The zodiac wheel is made up of 360°, with each sign occupying 30°. For the Moon, if another planet is within a 10° orb, they are considered to be making an aspect to each other. If this aspect is in the same or opposite sign, then it is considered to be harmonious. If it is not in a compatible sign then it is seen as challenging. Fire signs are compatible with Air signs, and Earth signs go best with Water signs. Aspects tell us if there will be challenges or if things will flow better.

There is no need for you to work these aspects out yourself on your Lunar Return chart. If you click on “Moon” in the planet position list on the right-hand side of the chart, the aspects the Moon is making with the other planets are listed. On Astro-Seek, Fire signs are red, Air signs are yellow, Earth signs are green and Water signs are blue.

Any planets that the Moon is making aspects to in the Lunar Return chart can be used as an additional layer on the themes for the month. Look to see which house the planets are in and if the aspect is harmonious or challenging. Here is a quick overview of the planets through the houses;

  1. The Sun - where to focus

  2. The Moon - where you are feeling emotional

  3. Mercury - where your mind is

  4. Venus - where you are feeling the love

  5. Mars - where you are driven

  6. Jupiter - where you have luck on your side

  7. Uranus - a little bit of chaos, where you should allow for change

  8. Neptune - where you will feel inspired or deceived and disappointed

  9. Pluto- transformation
