Mercury Retrograde in Pisces

Mercury has moved back into Pisces for the last week of this Mercury Retrograde. As the energy will feel different, this week’s blog is an update on what is going on now and moving forward into next week.

In my Mercury Retrograde In Aries blog, I explained the astrology behind a retrograde. Mercury Retrograde started in Aries and has now travelled back into Pisces. When the retrograde period ends, Mercury will travel back through Pisces and Aries in what is called the Post-Shadow phase.

Mercury is the planet of communication, covering how you talk, how you listen, how you read and write, and how you learn. Mercury also governs travel and commerce and is the quickest-moving and closest planet to us. When any planet goes retrograde, it is a chance for us to look back over things. The themes associated with that planet slow down, allowing us to investigate them deeper. During Mercury Retrograde, watch out for any issues that come up around things like communication, travel, technology and trade.

When working with retrograde energy it is important to not assume that everything is going to go wrong. If you expect problems, then you will get problems. Just be aware that old, unresolved issues may come to the surface and take this as your chance to finally resolve them. Because Mercury rules communication, watch out for misunderstandings with other people. Don’t assume they know what you are talking about or that they are deliberately trying to pick a fight with you.

I would advise against starting anything new during the retrograde period, but it is a great time for finishing projects, working on anything previously started or researching new ideas.

Remember that Mercury Retrograde is a second chance at something. We have been here before and now we get to try again. Personally, I passed my driving test during a Mercury Retrograde. It was my third attempt and the only time I survived for longer than 5 minutes in the car with the examiner!!

With all retrogrades, it is a good time to review what is going on in your life. Reflect on where you are now and where you want to go next. Research on things of interest. For example, research a new car or phone now, and then purchase it when Mercury goes direct. You might want to revisit places and people. Repair and reorganise things around the house. The most important thing to do during Mercury Retrograde is to double-check everything!! And back up your computer!!

Just like the moon is flavoured by the zodiac sign it passes through, so is Mercury. This gives us a different theme and area of our life to work on with each retrograde period. When looking at how we can best work with Mercury Retrograde, there are four things we need to know. The element and sign that Mercury is passing through, the part of your birth chart Mercury is travelling in and if Mercury is talking to any of your natal planets.

This retrograde started in a fire sign. This is the energy that lights us up and gets us excited and creative. As the energy is slowing down during the retrograde period, this could have shown up as delays. Fire burns brightly but eventually dies out.

Aries is the impulsive, brave, and often reckless first sign of the zodiac, so when Mercury was retrograde here, we got a second chance at being brave. A chance to be the fearless toddler where everything is new and exciting, and we want it now!! An opportunity to gain some clarity and look at where you have been procrastinating and avoiding things. The key message with Mercury Retrograde in Aries was to slow down.

Now that Mercury is in a water sign, it’s time to follow your instincts and revisit your emotions. Step back and take some time to go through your emotions. What are you feeling, why do you feel like that, and what are you making it mean? Gaining some perspective can help you break old habits that are holding you back.

Pisces is dreamy and spiritual and creative. This is a chance to spend time with dreams you may have abandoned, creative pursuits you’ve left unfinished and anything mystical that you feel drawn to. We can get lost in our hobbies, which in turn can bring clarity to our feelings.

This will be a good time to get back into meditation, to listen to music you loved years ago, to re-watch your favourite films or to re-read your favourite books. Get lost in your daydreams, rediscover your kind and compassionate side, and rethink your boundaries.

Watch out for confusion, getting so lost in dreams you can’t tell what's real or not, and any unhealthy behaviours you have to cope with the daily stresses and boredom of life. What will feed and nurture your imagination and soul?

Mercury Retrograde will end on the 7th of April, and during the post-shadow period, we can process the effects of the retrograde. As this is the third time that Mercury has travelled here, it can once again bring up the same issues. Hopefully, by now, you know how to deal with them, having already been here and done the work.

It can also be helpful if you know which house Mercury will be retrograde in, as this will give you an idea of which area of your life is most likely to be affected.
