On Monday (8th April) at 7.20 pm (BST) we have the New Moon Eclipse in instinctive Aries. As the first sign of the zodiac is an ideal New Moon to commit to working with the moon or to recommit if you are just going through the motions. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this New Moon and how you can work with it.

This will be a total solar eclipse (you can read more about the different types of solar eclipses here) that will be visible in America but not in the UK. As a North Node eclipse, this is a time to welcome new opportunities and changes. The South Node Full Moon Eclipse in Libra on the 25th of March was a time for letting go of the past, and this North Node New Moon Eclipse in Aries is guiding us towards where we want to go. Are you ready to follow?

New Moons mark the start of a new lunar cycle. This is a time to set our intentions for the next 4 weeks, which will help us to achieve our goals. Generally, anything started under a New Moon should be completed by the Full Moon in the same sign. This gives us a 6-month container to work with. (The Full Moon in Aries is on the 17th of October) When making New Moon Wishes, you can go as big or as small as you like. If you make a big wish, you can break it down into smaller, manageable goals. This allows you to track your progress as we move through each lunar cycle.

Not all New Moon’s are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, giving us a double dose of the sign's energy to work with. This is why people work with this energy to set their goals.

Aries is one of the four cardinal signs, which astrologically ark the star of tube season when the Sun moves into it. These are the more goal-focused signs which make them ideal for setting quarterly goals. Aries has themes around new beginnings, initiating and leadership, making it the ideal New Moon to take the lead in your life and set goals that you are excited and passionate about. Aries New Moon Wishes need to come from the heart. These should be things that you want and care about. If it feels like something you should do, then don’t bother.

As one of the three Fire element signs, Aries is energetic, daring, courageous, enthusiastic and spontaneous. The fire signs are all about taking action and Aries is a risk taker. This is the warrior of the zodiac and they are both childlike and natural leaders. This New Moon is a good time to be more assertive in your life. To be independent and confident. To have the unwavering Aries belief that you can achieve your goals.

When setting your Aries New Moon intentions, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.

  1. What are my goals for the next 6 months?

  2. Where do I need to be braver?

  3. Where do I need to concentrate my energy?

  4. How can I recharge my batteries?

  5. Where should I take a risk?

  6. Where do I need to take the lead?

There are also some practical ways that you can work with this New Moon. As an active fire sign, starting a new exercise or fitness program to get your body moving works well. If you have been putting something off, then the determined and excited energy of Aries is ideal for finally starting, or finishing something. If you have been playing small recently then follow Aries's lead and add some spontaneity into your life. If you have been a little reckless, then practising more patience is also a good way to work with the energy. Also, be mindful of your stress levels and make sure you are taking time to have more fun and aren’t just busy working all the time.

The first thing to note about this New Moon is that it is taking place during a Mercury Retrograde. When Mercury appears to travel backwards in the sky, we are gifted with a second chance. Mercury is the trickster planet, and when it is in retrograde it gets blamed for everything that goes wrong. And let’s be honest, if you expect the worst, you will get the worst. In astrology, the planet tells you what, the sign is how and the house is the area of your life that will be affected. Mercury is the planet of communication, short travel and commerce. In Aries, this is a second chance to be brave, to see things as fresh and new and to find the courage to move forward with things you may have been procrastinating on. During a retrograde, then energy is slowed down, so think before you speak and remember life is not a race.

Mercury Retrograde is important to this New Moon because it is the only other planet joining the party that the Sun and Moon are throwing. Mercury brings to the party clear thinking, clear communications and promising new ideas. By the end of Mercury Retrograde (25th April), you should have a clear plan of action and the courage and determination to follow it through.

Venus is also currently in Aries, but not close enough to make an impact on the New Moon. Venus is the planet of love and abundance, and in Aries, this is a time to put our needs first and be a bit selfish. Remember that you are the person who you spend the most amount of time with and if you are happy and in love with yourself, then that love will flow into other areas of your life. As Venus sorts of hovers outside the New Moon party, it is a good reminder to make your New Moon Wishes from the heart. What are you passionate about? What lights that fire inside you?

I also want to mention Chiron. This an asteroid and according to mythology, Chiron was a great healer and teacher. Chiron has been in Aries since April 2017 and will remain there until April 2027 thanks to its unusual orbit. As Chrion travels backwards and forwards through Aries, we are reminded that our healing is done in layers and that we never really get over something, we just learn to live with it. Chiron is going to be right next to the Sun and Moon, pulling our focus within ourselves. What do you need to heal? How has your healing journey shaped who you are? Be honest with yourself about what you want and what you don’t want.

There is a lot of fire energy around this New Moon, which combined with the powerful Eclipse energy means this is a great time to follow your passions, to put yourself first, and to consciously create the life of your dreams.
