On Monday (30th December at 10.26 pm (GMT), we have the final New Moon of the year in disciplined Capricorn. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this New Moon and how you can work with it.

New Moons mark the start of a new lunar cycle. This is a time to set out intentions for the next 4 weeks, which will help us to achieve our goals. Generally, anything started under a New Moon should be completed by the Full Moon in the same sign. This gives us a 6-month container to work with. When making New Moon Wishes, you can go as big or as small as you like. If you make a big wish, you can break it down into smaller, manageable goals. This allows you to track your progress as we move through each lunar cycle.

Not all New Moon’s are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, giving us a double dose of the sign's energy to work with. This is why people work with this energy to set their goals.

Capricorn is one of the four cardinal signs, which mark the astrological start of a new season when the Sun moves into them. These are the most goal-focused signs and so I like to use them to plan each quarter. Capricorn has themes around ambition, career and achievement, making it the ideal New Moon to set your goals for the year.

As one of the three Earth element signs, Capricorn is grounded, focused, stable, practical and able to keep moving forward. This is the mountain goat of the zodiac and they are sure-footed, unwavering and always reach their destination. The organised and disciplined Capricorn approach can be applied to help you achieve long-term success.

When setting your Capricorn New Moon intentions, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.

  1. What are my ambitions and goals for the year ahead?

  2. Where am I being stubborn?

  3. What do I need to prioritise?

  4. Where do I need to set boundaries?

  5. How can I achieve my goals?

  6. Where do I need to assert my authority?

There are also some practical ways that you can work with this New Moon. Make sure that your finances are up to date and review your home security for instance. As the most ambitious sign of the zodiac, this would also be a good time to start a new course of study or to update your CV and career plan. You might also want to create a structured plan for the next 6 months, start a new project and get outside more. Establishing new routines and structures now will help you to gain that long-term stability and security we all crave.

The chart for this New Moon is very quiet, with only Saturn joining in the fun!!

Saturn is a planet that contracts and restricts. This is the planet of karma, or life lessons, and is currently travelling through dreamy and mystical Pisces. Saturn is about structure and rules, while Pisces prefers to daydream and go with the flow. If you have any dreams that don’t feel achievable to you anymore, then Saturn is coming along to clear them out.

As the ruler of Capricorn, Saturn's influence on this New Moon is nothing but positive!! This will be a great time for bringing some structure into your life. It’s also good for work situations, including looking for a new job or getting that promotion.

Where do you need to plan better? Structure doesn’t have to be rigid, it can be the container that you work in while still allowing for flexibility and flow.

It is worth noting that Saturn is currently in a disagreement with Jupiter. While Jupiter is easygoing and more about expansion, Saturn is more serious and restrictive. Where might you need to find a compromise between making important changes in your life, and taking a risk to follow a good opportunity?

Don’t forget that Jupiter is currently retrograde in Gemini, the sign of communication, asking us to evaluate how we make decisions.

We are also still in the post-shadow of Mercury’s retrograde through Sagittarius where we are looking at what we have learned and what changes we want to now make. And as Mercury is also arguing with Saturn, watch out for a lack of concentration.
