On Wednesday (2nd October) at 7.49 pm (BST) we have the New Moon Eclipse in balanced Libra. The Sun moved into Libra on Sunday, marking the start of a new season with the Autumn Equinox. With day and night at equal length, our focus is naturally drawn to the balance in our lives. As the season visibly changes around us, we are reminded of the beauty of nature and the abundance she provides us with. And as this New Moon is an eclipse, the energy is even more powerful. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this New Moon and how you can work with it.

New Moons mark the start of a new lunar cycle. This is a time to set our intentions for the next 4 weeks, which will help us to achieve our goals. Generally, anything started under a New Moon should be completed by the Full Moon in the same sign. This gives us a 6-month container to work with. (The Full Moon in Libra is on the 13th of April 2025) When making New Moon Wishes, you can go as big or as small as you like. If you make a big wish, you can break it down into smaller, manageable goals. This allows you to track your progress as we move through each lunar cycle.

This New Moon is an Annular Solar Eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes in front of the sun, and an annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes in front of the sun but does not cover it completely. Instead, we see a large black disk on top of a larger bright disc, creating a ring of fire around the moon.

Eclipse season happens twice a year and this one started on the Full Moon on the 18th of September. This is when the Universe changes gear. So if you have wandered off your path then you can expect the Universe to course correct for you now. This could well come in the form of a disaster. That is why it is important to remain positive, to look for the lesson and to know that everything is happening for you, not against you. When the dust has settled and you look back, you will see how this was a good thing, that created the space you needed in your life for something bigger and better to come in.

Eclipses happen on either the North or South Node. The Full Moon in Pisces was a North Node Eclipse and this one is a South Node Eclipse. This means we need to release the past or give something up. The South Node is our comfort zone, it’s where we have already been. Whereas the North Node is where we are going and what we have to work towards. A South Node Eclipse in Libra could be the time to let go of toxic relationships that are keeping you stuck. Remember that you can’t move forward if you are still living in the past.

Not all New Moon’s are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, giving us a double dose of the sign's energy to work with. This is why people work with this energy to set their goals.

Libra is one of the four cardinal signs, which mark the start of a new astrological season and start a new cycle. These are the most goal-focused and ambitious signs which make them ideal for setting goals for the quarter. Libra has themes around relationships, balance and refinement, making it the ideal New Moon to set intentions around improving your relationships, finding a balance that works for you, and bringing more beauty into your life.

As one of the three Air element signs, Libra is social, impartial, diplomatic, fair and partner-oriented. The air signs are the most curious and intellectual. This can make Libra indecisive and superficial. This is the sign of the zodiac that likes to make sure everyone is getting along, settle disputes and loves aesthetics. This New Moon is a good time to settle legal disputes and find harmony in your life. What do your relationships look like? Where do you need to compromise or cooperate more? What conflicts do you currently have that you could settle now?

When setting your Libra New Moon intentions, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.

  1. What are my intentions for this lunar cycle?

  2. Where can I be more creative?

  3. How can I improve my relationships?

  4. Where am I being indecisive?

  5. Where do I feel out of balance?

  6. Where do I need to compromise?

There are also some practical ways to work with this New Moon. Libra is the sign associated with relationships of all kinds so organising a social event or networking and making new contacts is a great way to work with the energy. Another strong theme with Libra is music and the arts, this is the most elegant and refined of the signs after all, so taking time to appreciate the beauty around you, creating art or listening to music all work well with this New Moon. You may also want to redecorate or make changes at home. This is also the ideal time to compromise to resolve any disputes.

The chart for this New Moon has a nice cluster in Libra, with Mercury, the planet of communication, joining the Sun, Moon and South Node. While Mercury is in Libra, we will be more diplomatic and friendly, with a more rational approach to relationships.

Mercury's positive influence on this New Moon will bring clearer thinking, clearer communication and promising new ideas. This will be a good time to initiate conversations and to experience a stroke of genius.

We also have Mars, the planet of drive and determination, squaring this New Moon. Be mindful of impulsivity here as it is likely to cause problems. If you act first and think later then things might not turn out very well. Anything you start here has the potential to either run out of steam quickly or spiral out of control.

Mars is currently in the home and family sign of Cancer, which is very protective in nature. This will give us a strong desire to preserve and protect. As a water sign, Cancer can dampen the firey nature of Mars, so watch out for passive-aggressive tendencies and mood swings. As a cardinal sign, Cancer pushes for action, which works well with Mars.

Overall this New Moon Eclipse in Libra will have a strong focus on our relationships. With Mercury also in Libra, we can take a more logical and rational approach to them. What do your relationships look like? Are they healthy? Is there an equal amount of give and take? Are there any relationships that you need to move away from, or any old patterns from previous relationships that are impacting your current ones? And what about new relationships? This is an ideal time to start them.

Pay attention to any new ideas you have around the New Moon, but wait until the Waxing Crescent Phase to take action on them. By then, the Moon will have moved away from Mars and we will have time to think before taking action.
