On Monday (19th August) at 7.25 pm (BST) we have the Sturgeon Full Moon in visionary Aquarius. Watch out for unexpected endings in friendships and conversations coming to a head. We can’t give from an empty cup, and if we have been putting everyone else's needs above our own then now is the time to change that.

This week’s blog will look at the energy around this Full Moon and how you can work with it.

The Full Moon in August is called the Sturgeon Full Moon because of the freshwater fish that were readily caught in the summer by the Native Americans who lived in the region. Other regions called it the Corn Moon, Harvest Moon, Ricing Moon or Black Cherries Moon in honour of the riping crops ready to be harvested. What have you been working on this year that is ready to be harvested?

Full Moons mark the halfway point in a lunar cycle. This is a time to celebrate your progress and achievements, to practise forgiveness and to release anything still holding you back. If you look back to the New Moon in the same sign, 6 months ago, then you should have accomplished whatever you set out to do then. And if you haven't, then you should have a really good idea of why not.

The New Moon in Aquarius was in February, what goals did you set then? What has stopped you from achieving them? Have you let fear hold you back? Full Moons are when we start to clear out the stuff we don’t need to create space for the things that we do want.

Not all Full Moon’s are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A Full Moon is always in the opposite sign as the Sun, giving us a tug-of-war between the energy of the two signs.

Under this Full Moon, we need to find a balance between trying to be all the things to all the people (Moon in Aquarius) and having real relationships (Sun in Leo).

There is a lot going on in the chart for this Full Moon. Firstly, we have Mercury opposite the Moon and right next to the Sun. This puts our focus on communication and thinking. We can expect mental alertness, quick thinking and curiosity when Mercury meets the Sun. As they are meeting in Leo, this will likely bring flirty and creative fun. They are both squaring off against Urnanus so if you are feeling restless and frustrated, it would be wise to just go with the flow.

The Full Moon opposite Mercury could bring an ongoing conversation to a point of resolution or agreement. You should be able to amicably agree to bring a conversation to a close. An important piece of information could also come to your awareness.

With Mars also adding their influence to this Full Moon, it could be a time when you turn the corner on a big project. Mars invites us to be bold and more adventurous between the sheets.

Jupiter also wants to join this Full Moon party by bringing an overflow of good feelings. There will be a sense of joy and abundance, with higher than usual odds of an aha moment.

And these two planets are having a party of their own. Mars is the planet of action and moving forward, while Jupiter is the planet of luck and expansion. Together, they will give us a drive that is fuelled by optimism. In the communication sign of Gemini, this will be a time for enthusiasm and intellectual exploration. This meeting will give us a boost to our self-confidence and encourage us to go after what we want. There could also be a lot of talking going on with not a lot of listening.

While the Mars-Jupiter conjunction is an encouraging one, it is also squaring off with Saturn, the planet of karma and life lessons. This could make us feel like our opportunities are being restricted. It might cloud our vision and block our forward momentum. This energy also heightens frustration, restlessness and harsh behaviour. It is important to take a step back before rushing in. Channel this energy into fuel for your motivation, but also make sure you are not bullying other people to get what you want.

Venus, the planet of love and abundance, is also squaring this Mars-Jupiter conjunction. This may bring any tensions in our relationships to the surface and could also lead to overindulgence.

Finally, we have Uranus squaring the Full Moon. This could bring sudden endings that will leave us with no choice but to go along with changes.

Aquarius is one of the four fixed signs, which follow the cardinal signs and anchor in the things that have been started. These are the most stubborn of the signs. They are not easily distracted and do not deviate from the path. They are consistent, loyal, devoted, reliable and patient. Aquarius has themes around experimentation, inventiveness and progression, making it an ideal Full Moon for looking at any outdated beliefs you still have, or where you are still doing things the old way. Aquarius isn’t afraid to try things differently, to think outside of the box, and to be a rebel. If something isn’t working for you, then maybe it is time to try a different way.

As one of the three Air element signs, Aquarius is freedom-loving, intellectual and scientific. They are able to detach themselves from the situation and look for new ways. They are both independent and people-oriented. Air signs bring balance, what do you need to balance?

When looking at what is holding you back that you need to release under the Aquarius Full Moon, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.

  1. Where am I insecure?

  2. What stops me from expressing my emotions?

  3. What bad habits do I have?

  4. Where do I not feel safe to be myself?

  5. What outdated thoughts and beliefs do I need to let go of?

  6. Where am I being insensitive?

This Full Moon is a powerful time to focus on having more fun and creatively expressing yourself. An equilibrium needs to be found between that and emotionally investing in your friends and their needs. What do your friends need from you and how can you bring harmony between that and your own need for self-expression?

As Full Moons are also about endings, any friendships that end now have served their purpose. Let them go rather than fighting for them. This Full Moon is about change and progress. When we close the door on one chapter, we open the door to a new one. Anything that ends or slips away now is creating space for new and better things.
