On Thursday (25th January) at 5.53 pm (GMT) we have the first Full Moon of the year in creative Leo. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this Full Moon and how you can work with it.

Full Moons mark the halfway point in a lunar cycle. This is a time to celebrate your progress and achievements, to practise forgiveness and to release anything still holding you back. If you look back to the New Moon in the same sign, 6 months ago, then you should have accomplished whatever you set out to do then. And if you haven't, then you should have a really good idea on why not.

Not all Full Moon’s are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A Full Moon is always in the opposite sign as the Sun, giving us a tug-of-war between the energy of the two signs.

Under this Full Moon, we need to find a balance between what your friends need (Sun in Aquarius) and what you need (Moon in Leo). The Sun in Aquarius is pulling our attention to our communities and our friendship circles, while the Moon in Leo wants their affection and admiration.

The Sun is also currently right next to Pluto, the planet of death, destruction and transformation. This is asking us what do you need to let go of? What are you trying to control that you need to loosen your grip on? Opposite the Full Moon, Pluto can bring up dark emotions, deep rage, resentment and feelings of betrayal. Full Moons are an ideal time to release attachment, and when Pluto is involved, if you don’t do it willingly then you can expect it to happen more forcefully. This planet doesn’t mess around but it does make profound transformation possible.

Stop fighting, breathe through the challenges, and open yourself up to change and new possibilities.

Jupiter, the planet of good luck, expansion and growth, is currently in Taurus, the sign of cash, property and possessions. Both the Sun and Moon are currently squaring Jupiter, an angle that is often harsh. With the Sun, this is a reminder that if you want big results then you have to put in the work and see it through to the end. No shortcuts here. Meanwhile, the Moon is encouraging us to take a leap of faith and bring more fun into the proceedings.

We are supported this Full Moon by Mercury and Mars who are currently in Capricorn. Mercury rules our thoughts and minds, while Mars rules our actions. As the most disciplined sign of the zodiac, Capricorn is all about long-term success and achievement. When these two planets come together in this sign, we can expect our actions to be in alignment with our thoughts. This is a great boost for making progress on your goals. Just make sure you have removed whatever you feel is standing in your way under the Full Moon to clear your path.

Leo is one of the four fixed signs, which follow the cardinal signs and fix in place what was started then. These are the most stubborn signs and are great for maintaining focus on goals and projects. Leo has themes around self-expression, leadership and confidence, making it an ideal Full Moon for being honest with yourself about why you aren’t making progress on your goals.

As one of the three Fire element signs, Leo has passion, vitality, glamour, pride and courage. This is the Lion of the zodiac and they not only have belief in themselves, but they will also be a loyal and supportive friend. Leo is the show stopper who will not only show off what they have got but shine a light on other people too.

When looking at what is holding you back that you need to release under the Leo Full Moon, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.

  1. What is stopping me from expressing myself?

  2. Where am I blocking my passion?

  3. What stops me from having more fun?

  4. Where can I be more creative?

  5. Where do I need to be brave?

  6. Where do I need to direct my energy?

This is a powerful Full Moon to start the year. It is reminding us that we don’t have to do everything alone and that having a good support system in place will make all the difference. Once we have cleared away all the distractions, we can channel that Mars energy into one focus and watch our hard work pay off.
