The Planets in Astrology

On this week’s blog, I thought it might be a good idea to talk about the Sun, the Moon, and the Planet's meanings. If you have been hanging out in my corner of the internet then you will have seen me talking about the planets as they move through the zodiac and interact with the New and Full Moons. Maybe this made sense to you because you have an interest in astrology and have done some research yourself, or maybe it makes you wonder what the hell I‘m talking about!!

When most of us think of astrology, we think about our star signs and not much else. If you have delved a little deeper then you may know your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. But what do you know about the other planets?

First and foremost is the Sun. It is the centre of all life and represents a person's personality and spirit. In your birth chart, the Sun is your ego, your confidence level and what you will focus on in this life. The Sun spends 30 days in each sign, highlighting the traits and characteristics of that sign. If you have ever heard the term “Capricorn Season” (or any other sign), that is the time when the Sun is in that sign. We can use this information to set our goals for the month, or lunar cycle, as the New Moon is always in the same sign as the sun.

The Moon, on the other hand, gives us our soul. This is your inner self and what you need. The Moon represents the mother, maternal instincts, cycles, moods and emotions. She spends two and a half days in each sign which is why she is ideal for assigning daily tasks (and self-care) to help you achieve your goals.

Mercury is the planet of the mind and communication. In other words, it is the planet of the idea and the means to communicate the idea. It is how you listen, how you learn and how you express yourself. Mercury is also the planet of transport, trade and commerce. Mercury is known as the trickster, so your wit and humour also come from here. As the quickest planet, Mercury takes 88 days to orbit the Sun, but a year to travel through the zodiac, spending 14 to 30 days in each sign.

The next planet is Venus, associated with characteristics and principles of harmony and beauty. It is, of course, concerned with love. It is also concerned with the pleasure we derive from personal possessions. Venus is who and want you love, how you love and how you relate to other people. Venus takes 225 days to orbit the Sun and spends two to three weeks in each sign, unless retrograde.

Mars is the last fast-moving planet and is concerned with the things you want, and how you go about getting those things. This is the planet of sex and war, desire and action. Mars takes 687 days to orbit the Sun and spends roughly two months in each sign.

Jupiter is associated with pleasure and enjoyment, this is the planet of luck. Jupiter is the planet of joy, freedom, adventure and confidence. It also rules morals and faith and seeking the meaning of life. Jupiter takes around 12 years to orbit the Sun and spends about a year in each sign.

Saturn is associated with principles such as reality and restrictions, boundaries and rules. This is where you find your challenges and the lessons you need to learn. Saturn is the planet of Karma and doesn’t beat about the bush. You will face harsh realities with Saturn whether you want to or not. Saturn takes 29 years to orbit the Sun and spends two and a half to three years in each sign.

Uranus is the maverick of the zodiac. This is the planet that represents where you want to break free, where you want to do things your way, where you don’t care what other people think and where you are most independent. Uranus is the planet of progress, change, unexpected surprises and chaos. Uranus takes around 84 years to orbit the Sun and spends 7 years in each sign.

Neptune is associated with deception, illusions, spirituality and psychic phenomena. This is the planet of inspiration, dreams and soulmates. Neptune is about extremes, meditation and enlightenment at one end and addictions and intoxication at the other. Neptune takes around 165 years to orbit the Sun and spends roughly 14 years in each sign.

The last planet is the Lord of the Underworld. Pluto is associated with the concept of transformation, healing crisis, passion and power. This is the planet of the birth, death and rebirth cycle, where we flush out toxins and can fall into the abyss. Pluto in your chart is where you can change the world. Pluto takes around 248 years to orbit the Sun and spends anywhere between  12 and 30 years in each sign.
