The Moon and You
One of the most common questions I get asked comes when a New or Full Moon is in someone's star sign and they want to know “Is this special for me?” Essentially, no not really. Each New and Full Moon is special in its own right. It takes on the traits and characteristics of the zodiac sign that it is in. It will be influenced by the other planets, making each New and Full Moon unique. When you add your own personal astrology into the mix, that’s when it becomes special and unique for you.
So what is “your personal astrology?” A chart, known as a horoscope, can be cast for the exact time you were born. This is known as your birth (or natal) chart. This is a snapshot of the sky for the exact time, date and place you were born. Your natal chart is as unique to you as your fingerprint.
Every horoscope is divided into the 12 signs of the zodiac and maps the location of each of the planets. Your natal chart is also divided into 12 houses, each one covering a different area of your life.
Most people are aware of their star sign, this is actually your Sun sign because it is the sign that the Sun was in at the time you were born. Your Rising Sign is the sign that was on the Eastern Horizon at the time you were born and is the most important and personal point in your chart.
There are many different house systems, each one is perfectly valid. Moonology uses the whole house system. This assigns one sign per house which allows you to work on a different area of your life over the course of a year.
If you do not know your Rising Sign, because you do not know the exact time you were born, then you can use your Sun Sign. Otherwise, it is your Rising Sign that dictates the flow of the houses. Your Rising Sign will be the sign on your first house. The other signs will follow in the usual order, with the houses going counterclockwise.
For example, if you are a Leo Rising, then Leo will rule your first house. Virgo will rule your second house, Libra your third, Scorpio your fourth and so on. The next New Moon is in Aquarius, so for our example, this will be in their seventh house. The following Full Moon in Leo will be in their first house, which is opposite the seventh house.

The fourth house is where you come from, the fifth house is what you create and the sixth house is your day-to-day life. The seventh house is your personal relationships, opposite the first house, balancing your needs with your partner's needs. The eighth house takes your relationships deeper, opposite the second house, and is where your money meets other peoples. The ninth house is where you find your place in the world and ask deeper questions, opposite the third house of small talk. The tenth house is your work and career, opposite the fourth house of home and family, finding a balance between where you spend your time. The eleventh house is your communities and friendship groups, opposite the fifth house of fun, balancing your needs with everyone else's. The twelfth house is your dreams and fears, opposite the sixth house, balancing your need for structure with your need for freedom.
A New Moon breathes new life into whichever house it falls in. This is a chance to restart something in that area or try something new. The Full Moon can raise issues in the house where it falls. This is also a chance to address the balance between the two opposite houses.
When we look at the daily moon, that will focus our mind and energy on the house it is in and allows us to create, plan and predict our life with the moon.
As the moon moves through the houses in your chart, it will activate each area and bring that into your main focus. Let’s look at what this means for each New and Full Moon.
Your first house is the front door to your chart. This is how you come across to people, how you look and dress, and the impression that you give. During a New Moon, this is a time to restart anything to do with your appearance. This could be a makeover or updating your wardrobe. This is when we revamp anything that affects how people see us. During a Full Moon, find a balance between the people you care about and your own needs.
Your second house is all about cash, property and possessions. This is also your self-esteem, your values and what really matters to you. How you feel about yourself and how you handle money. The sign that rules this house will tell you how you earn and spend money. A New Moon here is a chance to restart financially, while a Full Moon can be when you turn a financial corner.
The third house is known as the communication house, but also covers siblings, neighbours and your local environment. The sign that rules this house influences how you communicate. A New Moon here gives us an opportunity to look at how well we are communicating, who we are talking to and how well we are getting our message across. A Full Moon here can be a turnaround in the way you are thinking and expressing yourself.
The fourth house is known as the home and family house. This is where you come from, where you feel like you belong and where you feel secure. It’s also our past, our childhood, our parents and our psychological roots. On a New Moon, we get to start over in any of these areas, it’s also a good time to move home. On a Full Moon, we need to look at that elusive work-life balance, deal with any daily issues that come up and think about where we feel secure.
The fifth house is where we find joy, and show who we are, what we have and what we can do. This is the stuff you do when you are not at work, the things that light you up. It’s creative and romantic and flirty and fun. On a New Moon, ask yourself if you are having enough fun or start a new creative project. Under a Full Moon, take some risks.
The nitty gritty practicalities of everyday life are found in the sixth house. This is your daily habits and routines, your duties and responsibilities, self-care and your health. This is how you get stuff done. For a New Moon, start new habits or routines, start a new diet or exercise plan, or do something nice for someone else. Under a Full Moon, end those bad habits and look at where you might be taking too much on.
The seventh house is the love house. The sign here will tell you what sort of people you are likely to fall in love with. Not only does this house rule your most important one-to-one relationships, it also rules your exs and enemies, and how you relate to other people. Under both a New and Full Moon, this is where relationship issues will come up that need to be dealt with.
The sexy and mysterious eighth house is associated with all things taboo, sex, money, death and taxes. This is where your money meets other peoples, investments, inheritance and orgasms. A New Moon here is a chance to restart your sex life or start over with money. Clear debts or take out a loan or mortgage. A Full Moon is when those things you don’t want to talk about can come up.
Our quest to understand the world, life, the universe and everything in between, falls in the ninth house. This is where we see the bigger picture of life, go on long trips or move on to higher education. Anything that broadens your mind. Under a New Moon, start a new course of study, go on a trip, or do some personal development. A Full Moon is a could time to finish a course or return home from a trip.
The tenth house is where you leave your mark on the world, your reputation and your vocation. This is all about ambition and success. What will you be remembered for? A New Moon could mean a new job, a change of direction in your career, a new job description or a completely new career. It doesn’t have to be a momentous change, you might even just want to plan out the next 12 months. A Full Moon could be the end of a job, work project or work cycle.
The eleventh house is known as the house of the thing wished for, and this is a biggy!! When the New Moon is in this house, wish big, wish for your deepest heart desire, wish for whatever you want!! This house also rules friendships, with the sign here showing what sort of friend you are and the sort of people you will connect with. Know that any friendships that end under a Full Moon here have served their purpose and it’s time to move on.
The final house is where we self-sabotage. This is your unconscious and everything that is hidden. Not only do our fears live here, but this is also where we retreat from life. Spirituality and religion also fall in this house. A New Moon in this house is a time to withdraw, retreat and contemplate life. Do some yoga, connect with your spirituality or simply look back at how far you have come. Under a Full Moon, face and release those fears. Find a balance between your spiritual life and all the things you need to do to keep life moving forward.
