Working With Virgo

With the New Moon last week being in Virgo, I’ve been thinking about my daily habits and routines and how having a good morning and bedtime routine can help to set you up for a great day. And during the day, there are other things you can do to improve your mood.

Let’s talk a little bit about morning routines first. This is one of those trending topics that people think are just popular right now and will be gone before we know it, but that isn’t true at all.

You have a morning routine now, whether you consciously realise it or not. You probably have certain tasks you like to get done shortly after waking up, such as brushing your teeth, taking a shower, walking your dogs, making your kids breakfast, or stumbling out of bed and rushing out the door to get to work.

We are not trying to reinvent the wheel with your morning routine, but instead, just add a few activities in your morning that will improve your day and your mood. And you don’t have to get up at 5am if you don’t want to!!

You could try journaling, doing a brain dump of whatever is on your mind, writing down 3 things you are grateful for, meditation, exercise or just visualising how you want your day to go.

How you end your day is just as important as how you start it. Better sleep isn’t just about more hours asleep, it's about getting restful sleep.

To help improve your sleep you could start your bedtime routine 1-2 hours before you actually want to be asleep. Try to avoid electronics before bed or other stimulants like caffeine or alcohol. Make sure your bedroom is set-up to give you a good night's sleep. Try to make sure it is cool and quiet and as dark as possible. Try doing some calming activities before bed such as reading, journaling, yoga or meditation.

Hopefully, these things will not only help you fall asleep easier but wake up feeling refreshed and energised instead of exhausted and cranky!!

Another theme with Virgo is diet and exercise. This might not be what you want to hear, but what you eat does make a difference in how you feel, including mentally. Some foods, like high amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates, give you energy and make you feel better in the short-term, but cause an energy crash, after which you might notice a worse mood.

When it comes to eating right, you want to focus on balance and proper nutrients. Not being on a restrictive diet, but just trying to get in more complex carbs, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and protein. Finding foods that fill you up but don’t leave you feeling bloated.

In addition to eating right, try to also get some regular exercise in. Again, we aren’t talking about completing a difficult fitness challenge or pushing yourself to do some extreme form of activity you don’t enjoy.

Instead, find some workouts that get you moving, you are motivated and excited to try, and that you actually enjoy. These can help you become mentally healthier and improve your mood exponentially, with the added benefit of being good for your physical health as well.

Another chance to your habits and routines that you might want to try following the Virgo New Moon is making self-care a priority. This is something I am passionate about and that is often misunderstood. A good self-care routine is simply doing one thing every day that you enjoy, that makes you happy and relaxes you.

That could be soaking in the bath, going out with friends, watching your favourite TV show or movie, reading a book or going for a walk. What are the things that you do for fun? How can you do them more often?

As a practical and organised sign, decluttering and bringing some order to your space is another great way to boost your mood during the Virgo Lunar Cycle. If you just spend a few minutes every day picking up things around your home and tidying as much as you can, it can help you to feel happier, healthier and more productive. No one likes a mess, it plays on your mind and makes you feel bad.

I hope you have found this week's blog helpful and can see how working with the energy of the Moon is more than just making wishes at the New Moon and releasing at the Full Moon. It’s about living a full and happy life.
